Citroën Xsara WRC

by Sun Star

The Citroën Xsara WRC -- The WRC champion that could not go unnoticed has deserved to be replicated in 1:18 scale since being introduced in 2001. That is why Solido, AUTOart, Bburago and Sun Star have made it, and while most would be quick to think the AUTOart version is best, they would all be wrong.

Allow me to explain…

You see, AUTOart had the chance to make the best Xsara but the diecast manufacturer decided to release it under the Motorsport line, which pretty much means, “Look but don’t touch.” You can say what you want but the truth is those models are meant to either go straight into your curio cabinet or stay neat inside the recently revised AUTOart window boxes.

With this said, fans of Sebastian Loeb and Citroën, I have a good feeling you’re going to like this alternative...

Starting with the interior, Sun Star did a fantastic job here!  The detail on the dashboard and the center console was executed beautifully.  I especially liked the fact there are several separate pieces; not just one covering or simulating others.  Furthermore, you will definitely appreciate the use of several colors on different parts  instead of having one very dull, monotone interior.  The seatbelts are separate pieces but they could use some detailing between buckles.

You will also notice the doors open with the aid of proper hidden hinges, the inner doors are textured and the interior is fully roll-caged.

The only things I would change, without causing [major] price increases, would be 1) to eliminate the lines around the center console which could probably be sanded down, and also 2) the sticker that represents the digital electronic dashboard as it looks very low-key.

Under the hood, you can find a reasonably detailed engine.  Paint is very thin on it but Sun Star, at least, used more than one molded piece like most budget manufacturers would have.  The use of more than one color for the separate parts as well as the presence of wiring makes this part of the car a pretty good effort.

As for the rear hatch, it does not open, unfortunately.  This is probably the biggest let-down on this model, but I think most would have been more upset if the hood or the doors didn't open; not much is being kept away from us to admire.

Looking at the exterior, Sun Star captured the shape of the car really well.  The lines and stance are spot-on and the panel gaps are kept to a reasonable minimum.  Some of the highlights are full side windows, the use of of tampo on most of the livery and photo-etch filters on the hood vents.  The thick antennae found on the roof of the car have remained firm since day one, so no signs of sagging or bending.

The wheels are slightly disappointing because the paint is too think on them.  They are supposed to replicate OZ's but they're not even labeled.  They tires are, however, but they appear a bit too shiny.  As for the brakes, they aren't labeled but the calipers are separate pieces, the cross-drilled rotors are plastic and rotate independently.  This sort of reminds me of what Classic Carlectables models does with their V8 Supercars.

Also worth mentioning, the Xsara comes with working suspension.  I really like this feature because unlike other efforts by other manufacturers, what you get here looks and works more realistically.  At first impression, it feels rather soft, but once the model is placed on the ground, it lays nice and even. When it's up, however, the springs make the wheels separate a lot from the car, just like you would see on a 1:1 -- It's very nice!

Conclusion

The Sun Star alternative is definitely the one to go with.  Working suspension, decent detail inside and out, hood and doors that open and a spot-on shape make this a no-brainer.  The flaws mentioned are forgivable because they are not major and you can almost expect them.  Even with that, this model is superior than Solido, Bburago and dare I say, AUTOart?

What makes this a must for any Loeb and/or Citroën fan is the fact that this model is super affordable; at $26 shipped, this little Citroën a steal!!

For those collecting WRC cars and champs, definitely don't miss out on this one!!

That's all for now.  Thanks for reading! Image hosted by Photobucket.com
